John Svendsen was adrift on the dark ocean all alone. After he shouted that the crew was abandoning ship into the radio, a torrent of water pummeled him down onto the steps of the companionway. He fought his way against the torrent and escaped to the weather deck. There he saw Walbridge climbing out along a horizontal mast before he jumped in the water.

In all of this, Svendsen had suffered numerous injuries—his face was battered, he had wounds on his head and neck, broken bones in his right hand, and trauma to his chest and abdomen.

In the water, he did not hear or see other crew members. He found an unopened life raft canister, which he could not open and so abandoned it. Later, Svendsen found a strobe light, which flashed in the dark, and kept it with him. Buoyed by his immersion suit, his distinctive long hair hidden inside the featureless hood, he floated, like a piece of debris. He could see empty immersion suits among the timbers and gratings and rigging and, not that far away, the still-floating wreck of Bounty.

Slowly, the first mate drifted away from the ship, a solitary speck on the ocean.
